Select Student Response Options to Support

iClicker Cloud is compatible with both mobile and hardware student response options. Students can use the iClicker student app to participate in attendance, polling, and quizzing on their mobile devices, tablets, or laptops. Students can also use iClicker 2 or iClicker+ remotes for free in iClicker Cloud courses, without having to purchase access to the app. (They just need to register their remotes in iClicker Cloud, and instructors need to have an iClicker base plugged in during class.) Most iClicker Cloud question types are supported by remotes.

Many institutions that transition from iClicker Classic to iClicker Cloud continue allowing students to use physical remotes. Allowing remotes can ease the campus-wide transition to iClicker Cloud if many of your students already own iClicker 2 or iClicker+ remotes. Extending student usage of remotes can also lessen the load on your wifi network if you are unsure how your classrooms would handle an all-mobile solution. Some instructors even disable the iClicker student app and require that all students participate with remotes.

Establish How Students will Access iClicker

After determining your students’ response options, your iClicker specialist will work with you on purchasing options for the iClicker student app, iClicker remotes, or both:

If you are interested in an all-mobile solution, you may want to consider a site license for your campus.
iClicker student app access codes and bundles—for example, the iClicker student app bundled with a remote, or the app bundled with another Macmillan Learning product—can be sold through your campus bookstore.
iClicker student app access can be delivered through a Sapling Learning or LaunchPad course. Students can buy an iClicker remote or iClicker student app access via the Macmillan Learning Student Store.
Students can purchase a subscription within the iClicker student app.

Train the Trainers

Early in the implementation process, your iClicker team will host a “train the trainer” session for your internal staff who support iClicker Cloud and/or the iClicker student app. This will get your teams comfortable well before you start rolling out the new technology on your campus.

Schedule Classroom Computer Imaging

While iClicker Classic is installed locally on an instructor’s computer or USB drive, the iClicker Cloud desktop software is typically installed on classroom computers. Instructors log in with their credentials to access their course data and run in-class activities. Our installed version of iClicker Cloud software uses an MSI package to facilitate the imaging of classroom computers. We typically schedule major software releases between academic terms—with the annual required update occurring during a flexible window over the summer—to minimize disruptions to the classroom experience. You can manage notifications about optional releases through the MSI installer.

As an alternative, we offer a standalone version of iClicker Cloud software that instructors can install on classroom computers without admin rights. If your podium machines get wiped periodically, as a last resort instructors can install the standalone software on a USB drive and plug it in to the podium computer to run iClicker Cloud in class. As a best practice, however, we recommend imaging classroom machines.
